HEBDEN BRIDGE WALKERS ACTION

Hebble Hole

Andrew Bibby has submitted this walk:

HB - Hell Hole Rocks - Calderdale Way - Hebble End - Pennine Way - Long Hey Top - Mytholm - HB

This was more or less the first walk I did after moving to Hebden Bridge almost twenty years ago. I've done it very many times since, and still love the way the views down to the Calder valley can be enjoyed so quickly after leaving the town.

Walk along Market Street, past the shops. Turn right up the 'Cuckoo Steps' (as the main road bends slightly to the right). At the top, briefly turn r. up Heptonstall Rd, before crossing and taking the signed footpath through the woods. Follow the path, enjoying the view down to Mytholm.

At Hell Hole Rocks, walk up the steps. At the top, turn l. and walk along the top of the hillside, on the well-walked Calderdale Way footpath. When the lane to Lumb Bank is met, turn l, then first right to find another path. Follow this past a house, then turn l. and drop down to the old stone bridge at Hebble Hole.

Here leave the Calderdale Way and pick up the Pennine Way up the hillside. At Long Hey Top turn l. down the track which makes its way through the woods down towards Charlestown. Just past Wood Cottages, turn l. off the track on to Peter Tillotson's concessionary footpath, then r. to find the path back down to Savile Rd, Mytholm. Here turn r. to find the main road near the Stubbing Wharf. Return on the canal towpath.
